Official Statement on the Situation on the National Border

Over the last 48 hours, more than 8,000 illegal immigrants from Morocco entered the territory of the Duchy from land and sea while en route to the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Spanish troops have been deployed to Ceuta and the Civil Guard is detaining trespassers for their subsequent deportation to Morocco.

For a city with a population of 85 thousand, a sudden influx of 8,000 migrants is nothing short of an invasion that endangers the safety of the population of the Spanish enclaves. The Duchy supports the efforts of the Spanish Government in restoring order.

In accordance with the Ducal Decree No. 2 of 4 April 2019, the custody of the national border is entrusted to the respective agencies of Spain and Morocco. We call on the Moroccan authorities to tighten the security on the border and put an end to the repeated unauthorized entry of Moroccan nationals into the Duchy and into Spain.
